Riley’s Garage Sale is a second hand store for various items I have stored in my garage and wardrobe that I no longer use or want to hold on to. Rather than go down the traditional route of online classifieds I chose to create a webstore, blog and youtube channel to advertise them. Aside from the obvious I wanted to be able to write about what I have, how I acquired and why I’m getting rid of it. The basic idea is to interrogate the reasons behind what I buy and consume; a meditation on materialism and my relationship with it in an attempt to reduce waste and reduce my impact on the planet. I don’t expect to make a stack of cash, the time and effort alone makes the entire process a fruitless endeavour in terms of profitability. Even so I hope that by presenting products in this manner I can help buyers to question their own behaviour when it comes to shopping online and understand the ramifications ecommerce.
